Molina Receives CMAC Approval to Participate as a Health Plan in Sacramento County Medi-Cal Program

Dec 09, 1999

(LONG BEACH, CA) Molina received approval from the California Medical Assistance Commission (CMAC) to serve as a health plan in the Sacramento Geographic Managed Care (GMC) program, which is designed to meet the medical needs of Medi-Cal patients in Sacramento County. In October, the Department of Health Services (DHS) referred Molina to CMAC for contract negotiations after DHS approved Molina's ability to serve as a GMC health plan. Molina's participation was conditional upon Molina and CMAC staff negotiating the contract that was approved by the CMAC board on Tuesday, November 23.

In the GMC Program, eligible beneficiaries chose among a limited group of private sector, participating health plans. The Sacramento GMC Program was the first in the state and began operations in April 1994 as a pilot project approved by the Federal Government. Molina was one of the first health plans that participated in the project, along with Kaiser, Blue Cross and Omni Health Care.

"Now Molina will be serving the county's Medi-Cal beneficiaries both as provider and as a health plan," says J. Mario Molina, MD, CEO of Molina. "Our participation as a health plan represents a total commitment on the part of Molina to provide quality care to the Medi-Cal beneficiaries in Sacramento County."
